October is National Co-op Month

Cooperative businesses keep ownership, with all its responsibilities and benefits, in the hands of workers, and keep the profits from the business in the local community. Cooperatives tend to be more democratic workplaces, and more responsive to the needs and concerns of the community. They are antidotes to many of the ills of large-scale corporate capitalism.
The Bay Area is a haven for cooperatively owned food businesses, many of which you probably support just because they're awesome!
TSH co-founder and Mission Fairy Jessica Prentice wrote an article in the Edible East Bay summer edition about cooperative businesses as Community Assets, and this accompanying poster highlights many of them in the East Bay.
