"Healthy Bones" Prickly Pear Shrub

For this very special shrub, we infused calcium-rich herbs in vinegar for several weeks to extract their bone-building minerals. Then we strained the vinegar and mixed it with local prickly pear, and raw honey. Dried Soup Mix Cooking Instructions

Our beef broth is cooked for approximately 48 hours before being jarred, lidded and cooled. According to Dr. Thomas Cowan, "In healthy, traditional cultures, when an animal was slaughtered, all the parts were put to use, including the bones, to make mineral-rich broth. Our modern diet, having largely forgotten the use of broth as the basis of our cooking, is estimated to have less than half the mineral content of more traditional diets. This rich mineral content and the fact that soup broths greatly aid digestion are just two of the many reasons why everyone should make soup broth a part of their daily diet."

New recipe! We're convinced our housemade deodorant is better than any aluminum-based, plastic-packaged deodorant on the market, to keep you smelling clean but not chemical-ly or perfume-y. We've played with our recipe to make it even more effective and nicer on the skin! Essential oils chosen for their antibacterial affect are blended into a base of coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax (from East Bay hives!) for a cream that is easy to apply with a barely noticeable scent.

Ingredients: coconut oil, refined shea butter, baking soda, arrowroot, beeswax, essential oils of black pepper, tea tree, lemongrass, rosemary and cedarwood.

Sweet but not too sweet, and balanced by the fat in the coconut, these are a great snack to eat while on the go (“in transit”)—and the dried fruit might help with the other kind of transit, too!

Finally--a store-bought mayonnaise as nourishing and delicious as homemade. No soybean oil! We mellow the flavor of Seka Hills olive oil with Straus yogurt cream, which also helps to preserve the fresh mayonnaise. Perfect on sandwiches and our Hamburgers, and use it to make homemade egg salad, potato salad, chicken salad, and as a base for creamy dips or salad dressings.
