Landsea is the pacific northwestern incarnation of the traditional Japanese seasoning gomasio (‘goma’: sesame +’ shio’= salt). In this version the salt is replaced with bull kelp, a mineral rich algae and nettles, a nutrient dense medicinal plant, which both flourish abundantly in this region. Landsea is designed to let the wild flavors of the Orcas Island shine, and to support your body with their nourishing powers. The salty flavor of bull kelp is predominantly potassium rather than sodium. This makes it an excellent substitute for table salt. Dried bull kelp is composed of up to 50% mineral, primarily potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and iodine among others. Bull kelp is also full of vitamins and essential fatty acids. Nettles have been described as nature’s multi-vitamin. Cocotella is a coconut butter with added cacao nibs and coconut sugar, stone ground for 3 days. It's like a healthier version of Nutella! All the ingredients are organic: it is a mix of healthy coconut fat and sugar that help to deliver direct trade Nicaraguan cacao. The key difference from other nut butters is the fact that coconut butter is solid at room temperature. However, at temperatures of 76 degrees and above, it starts to melt. Alice Rosenthal, beekeeper and rescuer, likes to think of honey as in Forest Gump's famous line, "Local honey is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you might get". The beauty and surprise behind local wildflower honey is - you just don't know what you're gonna get. But one thing for sure - they are all going to taste great and different from each other. Alice of Golden Gate Neighborhood Honey maintains slightly over 100 hives in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The majority of hives are from West Richmond, Upper Fruitvale, and North Oakland/South Berkeley areas. Most varieties are wild honey that was harvested while rescuing and relocating honey bees from naturally constructed hives. The honey is processed differently when it is harvested from a wild environment. Because there are no frames to support the comb it must be crushed (with hands) to liberate the honey. While harvesting the honey in this manner, small amounts of pollen and wax are blended into the honey. We will rotate the varieties each week. In our returnable 1/2 pint Jars!
